The responsibilities of the post may require the postholder to have regular contact with children or young people and, in the overseas context all posts are considered to be level 3 posts in view of potential situations which may allow unsupervised access to vulnerable children and young people.


Background
Save the Children in Nigeria Country activity is expanding rapidly, especially its nutrition, maternal, child and newborn health programmes. The programme responded to the acute malnutrition in one state northern Nigeria. Additionally, donors are increasingly demanding us to deliver more demonstrable value-for-money impacts and take this to additional states in the area. In response to its growing programme portfolio, the Nigeria Office has created this exciting role to strategically drive and manage the programming function which includes ensuring the implementation of a quality and effective programme and monitoring the performance of field teams, sub-contractors and partners are delivering profiled activity. This is a high profile role with demanding diplomatic and programmatic management requirements.
Job Purpose
Strategically lead and manage the Infant and Child Nutrition programme in Northern Nigeria; accountable for the achievement of programme deliverables and delivery of the joint log-frame within the consortium and with UNICEF.
Key accountabilities
• Manage and lead programme related strategic liaison with in-Country government, donors, consortium INGOs and Agencies. Manage relationships to ensure ongoing programme performance and technical quality assurance.
o Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM)
o Infant & Young Child Feeding (IYCF’s 3 components: facility based, community based, mass communication)
o MNCH weeks (Vit A, de-worming, Fe-Folic for pregnant women)
 Zn/ORS for management of diarrhoea used in the 3 above
o Policy and advocacy (Federal and State level)
o Studies and survey
• Ensuring the programme meets or exceeds agreed targets. To include reviewing cross-consortium programme performance data and programme management arrangements on a monthly basis, identifying and agreeing residual actions, mitigation activities and influencing consortium partners to ensure partner performance is maintained.

• Maintain a close working relationship with the technical team to ensure that the programme achieves technical excellence, embedding continuous improvements in operational aspects of programmes.
• Inspire, lead and motivate programme teams to deliver on programme objectives.
• Identify, implement and improve accountability mechanisms for operating under commercial arrangements across partnerships and programme consortium arrangements.
• Focus on and respond to requirements of scale-up through replicating and ensuring economies of scale on identified effective programmes and techniques. Develop programme systems that are flexible and responsive to changing demands.
• Identify and effectively manage all key risks related to the programme
• Develop monitoring strategy of field teams and sub-contractors and undertake ongoing monitoring activity.
• Ensure that you work to the best of your ability and demonstrate high levels of commitment to Save the Children and our vision, mission and values in order to ensure the objectives of your role and the country programme are met.
• Ensure the effective and efficient use of all Save the Children resources in order to keep costs low and ensure safety in the workplace.
• Comply with the requirements of Save the Children’s Child Safeguarding Policy to ensure maximum protection for children.
Person specification
Essential characteristics
• Minimum of 4 years experience managing multi-states programmes with a demonstrable track record of meeting or exceeding programme targets, while maintaining technical quality.
• Self-motivated and results orientated.
• Highly numerically articulate with a track record of data manipulation and use of spreadsheets and reporting systems.
• Experience in management of finance and budget monitoring and risk management.
• Experience of steering research and using it to inform programming methodology.
• Substantial experience of working and living in Africa.
• Proven ability to manage multi organisation and multi-regional or multi-country teams and to lead, motivate and develop others.
• Self-motivated and results oriented.
• Highly diplomatic and emotionally intelligent with strong oral and written communication skills.
• Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles

Desirable experience and characteristics
• Post-graduate qualification in Nutrition/Hunger or related relevant discipline
• Professional experience in Nigeria.
• Demonstrable understanding of Value for Money and DFID results agenda.
• Experience managing large consortium grants.
• Ability to coach and mentor multi-sectoral partners
