Reports to: Senior Programme Manager (Infant and Child Nutrition)
Child Protection Level: 3 - The responsibilities of the post may require the post-holder to have regular contact with children or young people and, in the overseas context all posts are considered to be level 3 posts in view of potential situations which may allow unsupervised access to vulnerable children and young people
Background
Save the Children Nigeria Country activity is expanding rapidly, especially its nutrition, maternal, child and newborn health programmes. The nutrition programme aims to respond to high levels of acute malnutrition in Northern Nigeria. Donors are increasingly demanding us to deliver more demonstrable value-for-money impacts and take this to additional states in the area.
Job Purpose
The main purpose of the post is to design and support a high quality and integrated programmes in Nigeria that reduce malnutrition and provide strategic support to the implementation of the child survival plan embarking on or strengthening our nutrition work.
Key accountabilities
1. Programme support
1.1. Provide support and guidance in terms of strategy and technical aspects to all Save the Children nutrition programmes or activities implemented at the States’ level.
1.2. Lead on technical support for nutrition related activities within Programme in Reviving Routine Immunization in Northern Nigeria/Maternal New Born Child Health (PRRINN/MNCH) programme, including strategy, planning, trainings and follow up of activities.
1.3. Carry out frequent field visits to the programmes.
1.4. Participate on monthly technical meetings related to the joint Nutrition programme for Northern Nigeria and the PRRINN/MNCH Consortium.
1.5. Keep updated on research and nutrition programming updates at the national and international level and share with field staff.
1.6. Advise on budget requirements for nutrition programmes, ensuring effective use of Save the Children resources, and supporting fundraising, where appropriate securing and managing grants.
2. Documentation and Reporting
2.1. Contribute to policy development relating to nutrition and ensure this is consistent with Save the Children overall approach.
2.2. Pro-actively provide input into global research and advocacy initiatives and objectives drawing on the Nigeria experience.
2.3. Produce timely high quality reports and documentation both to meet donor demands and to portray Save the Children’s experience within the nutrition sector in Nigeria and to actively disseminate these in an appropriate fashion and format.
2.4. Make presentations to donors and stakeholders.
2.5. Participate in relevant research.
2.6. Provide information and other communication materials for effective support of other departments by meeting service requirements.
3. Representation
3.1. Link and coordinate with key players in the nutrition/livelihood/food security sectors (partners Government, development agencies, and research institutes) at Federal and State levels.
3.2. Represent Save the Children’s values and mission, as well as the Nigeria programme experience, at all national - and when requested – international or regional fora related to the food security and livelihood sector.
3.3. Participate on the development and review. of nutrition related national documents (guidelines, policies, etc.) providing technical inputs in line with Save the Children position paper, policies and evidence based programme expertise.
3.4. Maintain an understanding of all donor agendas and support proposal developments for funding both to maintain and expand Save the Children’s work and influence within the nutrition sector.
3.5. Comply with the requirements of Save the Children’s child protection policies and other staff policies.
Place of Work
The post will be based in Abuja, but will require approximately 40% time travelling in other States with occasional international travel.
Person specification
Essential
• Academic/professional qualification at post graduate level or equivalent in nutrition
• Substantial operational experience and a track record of success on nutrition programming
• Sound strategic thinking and planning skills, including ability to think creatively and innovate and to set priorities, manageable work plans and evaluate progress
• Demonstrable ability to acquire a high level of thematic expertise on priority issues within nutrition
• Experience in providing technical support to partners and in particular government at senior levels.
• Experience in supporting development of national guidelines and policies.
• Proven capacity to develop a network of contacts with key players from amongst government, donors, international agencies and NGOs, to maintain these relationships over time and to raise significant funding from donor grants.
• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and negotiate clearly and effectively at all levels.
• Tact and diplomacy are essential.
• Proven capacity to deliver results against objectives, reporting schedules and workplans.
• Fluency in written and spoken English
• Proficient in word processing, presentations and spreadsheet computer packages.
• Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s values and mission.
Desirable
Knowledge and particular interest in Nigeria and/or West Africa.
Understanding of food security and livelihoods programmes
Experience of working with consortiums
