Essential Responsibilities
As a member of the Energy Services (ES) Risk Team, the Contract Risk Attorney (CRA) will support each of the business segments within GE Energy Services across the Africa and the Middle East. The Contract Risk Attorney will coordinate with Commercial, Sales and Operations Teams through the development of winning strategies on GE’s contractual agreements. The Contract Risk Attorney will identify and provide solutions to minimize/mitigate risks. The CRA would also ensure compliance with the internal risk screening process (Policy 5.0) and Delegation of Authority (DOA). The job location is either Lagos, Nigeria or Johannesburg, South Africa.
The responsibilities of this position include:
- Serve as a key member of the Sales, Commercial, and Operations teams to support profitable growth and execution of all Energy Services business segments primarily across Africa but also across the Middle East.
- Draft and negotiate international contractual agreements with customers for the supply of equipment, parts, and services.
- Provide claims and dispute resolution support during the execution of contracts.
- Provide legal training for the broader region teams, particularly on contract terms and conditions (Ts&Cs).
- Proactively direct & support Energy Services Risk initiatives to improve processes and local capabilities.
- Participate in regional risk councils in an effort to foster a culture of risk management.
- Collaborate with other regions in sharing best practices and lessons learned in risk management.
- Be flexible for both domestic and international travel 20%-30% of the time.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Excellent verbal and written communication in English and French.
- Must hold Legal degree from an accredited law school and be admitted to local Bar and be well versed in various African jurisdictions.
- Strong academic record.
- Minimum 8 years of commercial/transactional experience.
- Proven communication, drafting, and negotiation skills with the ability to influence.
- Hands-on experience in negotiating sophisticated long term contractual agreements.
- Demonstrated prioritization skills and ability to manage multiple projects/issues.
- Strong command of civil/administrative laws and international commercial law, including working knowledge of principal international conventions.
- Ability to deal effectively with people and work in a team environment.
- Commitment to integrity and professionalism.
Desired Characteristics -
Hold LL.M. degree and be admitted to US or European Bar.
- Prior experience in litigation matters.
- Prior experience in negotiating contracts throughout Africa.
- Prior experience negotiating long term service agreements.
- Fair financial acumen with an understanding of contractual and transactional accounting methodologies.
- Sound understanding of insurance contracts, bonds, etc.
- Sound understanding of the Energy industry.
- Ability to provide creative business-oriented advice in a global, multi-cultural, and fast-paced environment.
